In 2010 the Distinguished Alumni Awards went to John Densmore for Professional Achievement and Sally and Allan Young for Community Service.
Best kown as the drummer for the legendary rock group, The Doors, Densmore received his degree from SMC in 1965 before joining up with Robby Kreiger, keyboardist Ray Manzarak and the great Jim Morrison to launch an explosive chapter in rock 'n roll history. He remains active in the music and theater world and in 1991 published his autobiography, Riders on the Storm: My Life with Jim Morrison and The Doors. It was a New York Tiimes bestseller
Recognized for their contributions to the community of Santa Monica, Sally and Allan Young met at SMC and have been married for 35 years. Active with the Boys and Girls Club since 1955, Allan is now the Managing Trustee with the Pacific Youth Foundation, a private foundation dedicated to providing resources for the Club. He has also been actively involved in Upward Bound, Los Angeles United Way, Rotary Club and New Roads School in Santa Monica.
Sally Young has spent 35 years working for women and girls as Executive Director for the Girls Clubs of North Orange County and the Santa Monica YWCA. She has also been active with Habitat for Humanity and is a member of the YWCA World Service Council and volunteers with the YWCA Pacific Region Association Services Committee.
Nominations are welcome from the College and the community for the two awards.
SMC has a rich tradition of serving the community and many outstanding alumni among its ranks, including Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Academy Award winner Dustin Hoffman, Olympic medalists and successful scientists, educators and business leaders.
