Dr. Eric J. Williams has dedicated his career to advancing nursing education, championing diversity in healthcare, and inspiring generations of students and nursing professionals. As Associate Dean of Health Sciences and Nursing Program Director at Santa Monica College, he has helped shape the future of nursing through his commitment to academic excellence, inclusive leadership, and student success.
A nationally recognized nurse educator and leader, Dr. Williams served as the 12th President—and first male president—of the National Black Nurses Association and as Co-Lead of the AARP/Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future of Nursing Campaign Steering Committee for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion from 2019 to 2022. Throughout his career, he has presented locally, nationally, and internationally on healthcare and nursing education while mentoring future nurses and advocating for greater opportunity within the profession.
Dr. Williams earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from William Carey University, his Master of Science in Nursing from the University of South Alabama, and his Doctor of Nursing Practice in Educational Leadership from Case Western Reserve University. His many honors include induction into the William Carey University Hall of Fame, the National Black Nurses Association Trailblazer Award, and designation as a Fellow of the Academy of Nursing Education, Academy of Diverse Leaders in Nursing, and American Academy of Nursing.
The Dr. Eric J. Williams Endowed Nursing Scholarship was established in honor of his remarkable career and lifelong commitment to educating future nurses. As he celebrates his retirement from Santa Monica College after 25 years, this scholarship will continue his legacy by supporting nursing students as they pursue careers dedicated to caring for others.
