



Dr. James (Jim) Murphy dedicated 28 years to teaching chemistry at Santa Monica College, sharing his love of chemistry with his students and colleagues. While at SMC, Jim was twice awarded the Northrop Grumman/Elkin Chair of Excellence in Physical Science. Jim used this honor to mentor students through independent research projects in physical chemistry, igniting the joy of scientific discovery in his students both inside and outside the classroom. In keeping with his dedication to his students, Jim also served as faculty advisor to the Chemistry Club for nearly a decade. He was deeply committed to education and shared his passion for science with care, thought, and enthusiasm.
Born in Los Angeles, Jim Murphy grew up in Los Angeles and in Rochester, NY. He graduated from the State University of N.Y. at Binghamton with a degree in chemistry and graduated from M.I.T. with his Ph.D. in chemistry. He was an accomplished bluegrass guitar player and loved music, weather, and his family.
The James E. Murphy Memorial Scholarship was established by his family and friends in tribute to Jim’s love of science, teaching, and the Department of Physical Sciences. This scholarship continues to support students and honors Jim’s legacy at Santa Monica College. Thank you for supporting this scholarship in his memory!
