Matthew Scherrer was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri before attending Princeton University,
where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Economics. He attended Princeton on an Army ROTC scholarship and
was the Cadet Commander of the unit there. When the September 11 attacks occurred,
only months following Capt. Scherrer's (Ret.) college graduation, his time as an active
duty member of the military changed dramatically relative to original expectations.
He joined the 75th Ranger Regiment, considered the premier light infantry force in
the world, as an Airborne Ranger and combat platoon leader in 2003. As a Ranger,
Capt. Scherrer (Ret.) was deployed into combat twice in each of Afghanistan and Iraq.
Following the completion of his active duty commitment, Capt. Scherrer (Ret.) completed his MBA at Harvard Business School in 2007. He returned to his hometown of St. Louis and joined the Private Equity investment firm Thompson Street Capital, where today he serves as a Managing Director.
The Captain Matthew B. Scherrer (Ret.) Scholarship for Military Veterans was created in 2024 by his brother, Doug, who is a member of the Board of the Santa Monica College Foundation, to honor Capt. Scherrer's (Ret.) military service and provide support to SMC students who are military veterans. Thank you for supporting this scholarship in his honor!
