Genoveva ‘Veva’ Nieto-Escobar was born in Chalco, Mexico and immigrated with her family to the United States in 1974. Raised in Santa Monica, Veva graduated from Santa Monica High School and attended Santa Monica College, earning her Associate’s degree before transferring to California State University, Dominguez Hills, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. Her passion to help others led her to the University of Southern California where she completed her Master’s degree in Social Work. Veva worked tirelessly as an advocate for the Latino community, providing clinical health services as a therapist. She motivated all youth to seek higher educational opportunities as an SMC Outreach Counselor. Veva worked hard, enjoyed life, and welcomed the wisdom of the world with open arms. She encouraged people to “take the extra step in life because it will lead you to where you want to be.”
The Genoveva Nieto-Escobar Memorial Scholarship has been established in her memory by the family and friends of Genoveva to honor her support and commitment to student success.
