Jere Lee Romano’s legacy is one of extraordinary service, leadership, and compassion. He was a selfless, kind-hearted man of honor and integrity with an unwavering commitment to the service of others. A proud Marine Corps veteran, he dedicated his life to supporting fellow veterans, students, and his community. For more than a decade, he guided student veterans at Santa Monica College as advisor to the Student Veterans of America club, mentoring many in their educational journey and transition to civilian life. Through his leadership with American Legion Palisades Post 283 and collaboration with the Santa Monica College Foundation, he helped establish the college’s first veteran-focused scholarships for both male and female students.
His devotion to others was reflected in his broad community service through the American Legion, Mission Continues, Team Red, White & Blue, the Los Angeles National Cemetery, the West Los Angeles Veterans Campus, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Meals on Wheels, and countless other efforts. He was featured at numerous public speaking events throughout California on veteran issues and tirelessly pursued legislation and advocacy for the betterment of veterans and their families, often at his own expense. He gave generously of his time and resources without reservation or hesitation. His heart and acts of kindness far exceeded even his commanding 6-foot-4 stature. He served the American Legion with distinction as State Commander and National Executive Committeeman, strengthening programs that uplifted veterans and their families. His commitment to public safety was equally remarkable, with more than 30 years in law enforcement, service as a Sergeant, and retirement as a Police Captain. Over the course of his military and civilian career, he received numerous honors for valor, courage, sacrifice and service, including the Purple Heart, and was also recognized as Elks Lodge Officer of the Year. Above all, he was a man who deeply loved his family, enjoyed travel, and cherished good times with good people.
