The Nancy Greenstein Public Policy Fellows endowment was established in 2017 by Nancy to support SMC students enrolled in Public Policy Institute (PPI) courses and/or SMC’s Homeless Service Work Certificate program. Students with at least a 2.5 GPA and who qualify for financial need are eligible for the fellowship.
PPI’s interdisciplinary and practical approach instills confidence and resourcefulness in students, while the required specialization enables students to acquire a deeper understanding of the area of public policy in which they are most passionate. The associate degree covers specialization areas including arts/cultural affairs policy, education policy, environmental policy, public health, and urban/socioeconomics.
The Homeless Service Work Certificate program launched its pilot in fall 2024 and is designed for students who are interested in starting a career in the homeless response system. Students will gain an understanding of the framework, funding source, and guidelines involved in serving unhoused and formerly unhoused people by utilizing effective practices and strategies.
Elected to the SMC Board of Trustees in 2002, Nancy was a driving force in developing the aforementioned programs. Nancy is nationally recognized for programs and strategies that bring together diverse groups and agencies to resolve pressing issues. She is a founding member of the Social Justice Learning Institute Board of Directors, an organization dedicated to improving education, health, and wellbeing of youth and communities of color enacting social change through education, training and community mobilization. She serves on several boards and committees for numerous organizations including the Southern California American Civil Liberties Union and the Los Angeles County West Vector District.
