Nina Turns 100!

Nina Theiss devoted more than five decades to inspiring students and strengthening the academic community at Santa Monica College. After earning both her B.S. in Education with honors and her M.A. from Southern Illinois University, she joined the Santa Monica College English Department in 1960. Known for her sharp intellect, steady leadership, and unwavering commitment to student success, Nina encouraged generations of students to think critically, engage deeply with language, and appreciate the power of clear communication. Her passion and extensive knowledge even made grammar classes enjoyable—an achievement her students remembered fondly. Elected Chair of the English Department in 1970, she served in that role for 32 years and continued teaching and mentoring until her retirement in 2002, leaving a lasting imprint on the college she helped shape.

Nina’s dedication to SMC students extended far beyond the classroom. For more than 30 years, she has generously supported student success through her charitable giving, continuing her lifelong mission to open doors for learners of all backgrounds.

In celebration of her 100th birthday, Nina established the Nina Theiss Scholarship to support students who share her curiosity and love of learning. In lieu of presents, she invites friends, colleagues, and former students to contribute to the scholarship fund. Every donation honors her remarkable legacy and helps ensure that her lifelong commitment to education continues to open doors for future generations. Thank you for supporting this scholarship in her honor!
