The Nancy Greenstein Public Policy Fellows endowment was established in 2017 by Nancy to support SMC students enrolled in the Public Policy Institute (PPI). Students with at least a 2.5 GPA and who qualify for financial need are eligible for the new scholarship. PPI’s interdisciplinary and practical approach instills confidence and resourcefulness in students, while the required specialization enables student to acquire a deeper understanding of the area of public policy in which they are most passionate. The associate degree covers specialization areas including arts/cultural affairs policy, education policy, environmental policy, public health, and urban/socioeconomics.

Unique to community colleges, SMC’s Public Policy Institute is the first of its kind and a leader nationally for implementing this program at a two-year college. Nancy states, “Experiential learning provides invaluable opportunities by advancing classroom learning into relationships, providing mentoring, training, and hands-on experience.

Elected to the Santa Monica College Board of Trustees in 2002, Nancy was a driving force in the establishment of SMC’s Public Policy Institute. She served as the Director of Police Community Services at the UCLA Police Department from 1997 until her recent retirement in June 2017. Nancy is nationally recognized for programs and strategies that bring together diverse groups and agencies to resolve pressing issues. A current board member of the Southern California American Civil Liberties Union, Nancy continues to serve on many boards and community organizations.
